Using texture to enhance graphic design
September 4th, 2008

Complex textural elements add visual richness and a photographic realism to graphics. One of the latest trends in design is employing wear, texture, and pattern to produce imagery with greater impact. See how NetThink 21 creates realistic graphics using nothing more than Photoshop.

Step 1
The goal is to create a well-used tweed guitar case with character and personality. The process starts with roughing in the basic shapes of case and handle. At this point the design appears completely flat.

Step 2
Detail is added with end caps, piping, and hardware like latches and feet.

Step 3
Texture is now applied using a texture library. Tweed pattern covers the main case. A weathered pattern emulates leather on the end caps. Gradients and shading give dimension to the flat shapes, including a subtle outline for the handle.

Step 4
A band name is added to the guitar case, complete with drips and overspray to emulate a stenciled and spray-painted name. The text is slightly transparent and takes up the tweed texture it rests upon, just as spraypaint would.

Step 5
Final touches include weathered and creased stickers which add color, personality, and visual interest. A subtle shadow finishes off the image by adding weight to the object.
